What is an adjective?
An adjective describes a noun (a person, place or thing). It tells you what kind, which one or how many.
the fluffy cat · a huge, red balloon · three happy children
Comparing: -er and -est
| Comparing… | Short words | Longer words |
|---|---|---|
| two things (comparative) | add -er: tall → taller | use more: more exciting |
| three or more (superlative) | add -est: tall → tallest | use most: most exciting |
Spelling changes: big → bigger (double the last letter) · happy → happier (y → i) · nice → nicer (drop the e)
The irregular ones
| Adjective | Comparing two | Comparing three or more |
|---|---|---|
| good | better | best |
| bad | worse | worst |
| many / much | more | most |
| little | less | least |
Watch out! Never use both: more better ✘, most tallest ✘. It’s either -er/-est or more/most, never both.
Top tip: “than” is a clue you’re comparing two things (taller than). “the … of all” or “ever” means three or more (the tallest of all).
