What is a pronoun?
A pronoun takes the place of a noun, so we don’t repeat it: Sam lost Sam’s bag. → Sam lost his bag.
| Doing the action | Having the action done to them | Belonging |
|---|---|---|
| I | me | my / mine |
| you | you | your / yours |
| he | him | his |
| she | her | her / hers |
| it | it | its |
| we | us | our / ours |
| they | them | their / theirs |
I or me?
Take the other person out and see what sounds right:
- Mia and I built a sandcastle. → I built a sandcastle. ✔
- Grandad took Leo and me to the cinema. → Grandad took me. ✔ (not took I)
Who, which and that
- who for people: the girl who won
- which for things and animals: the book which I read
- that for either: the dog that barked
Watch out! their = belonging to them (their coats), there = a place (over there), they’re = they are.
Top tip: it’s polite to put yourself last: “Mia and I”, not “I and Mia”.
