📈 Reading points

Reading a point

On a line graph, each point shows one reading. To read it:

  1. Find the time (or label) along the bottom.
  2. Go up to the point.
  3. Go across to the scale on the side and read the value.

Height of a sunflower

010203040506070Height (cm)Wk 1Wk 2Wk 3Wk 4Wk 5

In week 3 the point is halfway between 30 and 40, so the sunflower was 35 cm tall.

What the line tells you

Finding a change

How much did it grow from week 1 to week 4? 50 − 10 = 40 cm

Watch out! Check what the scale goes up in, and whether it starts at 0. Some graphs start higher to save space.

Top tip: to find when something changed the most, work out the difference between each pair of points next to each other.
